Why the Dallas Arboretum is Magical for Engagement Photos
If you’re dreaming of engagement photos full of color, romance, and garden charm, the Dallas Arboretum is one of those rare gems right in the city that delivers it all. With 66 acres of themed gardens, water features, mature trees, and views over White Rock Lake, there’s a diversity of backdrops that allow your love story to unfold naturally.
What I love most: even in winter, there’s always something blooming or green, so your photos don’t feel dead or barren. (Many other garden locations fade at that time — not here.)
If you choose the Arboretum for your session, here are tips and insights to help you relax, shine, and make the most of the day.
Best Timing
The gardens open at 9 a.m. and professional photography is not permitted before then.
Aim for early in the day or later in the afternoon to capture soft light and avoid crowds. I like to arrive right at open and be one of the first ones in.
In fall or winter, booking the last allowed times is smart — you’ll catch that warm “golden hour” glow emotionally close to garden close time.
2. Choose 2–3 Key Spots (Don’t Try to Hit Everything)
Botanical gardens tend to be large, with many photo-worthy corners. Trying to see it all in one session can eat into your time, energy, and momentum.
Before the shoot, look through their garden maps or browse past photos to flag your favorite areas (arches, water features, flower beds, benches).
Let’s pick 2–3 “must-have” spots so we can move intentionally and not feel rushed.
Leave freedom for spontaneity — I’ll scout a few hidden gems along the way.
3. Shoes, Wardrobe, and Comfort
Heels are lovely, but plan for flats or walking shoes in between. Gardens often have uneven paths or gravel that can be tough on heels all session long.
Bring layers. If it’s warm, a light sweater or shawl can look beautiful in photos. If it’s cool, a jacket adds texture and warmth.
Avoid clothes that are too tight or stiff; you’ll want to move naturally. Flowy dresses, soft fabrics, and outfits you feel confident in always photograph beautifully.
4. Bring Essentials (That Don’t Steal the Spotlight)
- A water bottle (hydration matters and portrait sessions can be surprisingly active). Do not forget this one!
- Hairbrush, lip balm or lipstick touch-up, a small compact mirror
- Spare safety pins or double-sided tape (for dress or skirt fixes)
- Bug spray and sunscreen
- A small bag to hold these so you don’t carry them the whole time
Logistics & Budgeting You Shouldn’t Skip
Admission is typically $20 per person. Your photographer will need a ticket (unless they have a membership).
Parking costs too (often around $15 at the gate) unless you reserve in advance.
Try to avoid holiday display periods (pumpkin festivals, Christmas light installations) unless you want those for your backdrop — they can date your photos or make parts of the garden unusable for sessions. If you aren't able to avoid these times, we can definitely work around it!
Your Connection Over the Pose
The best photos happen when you forget the camera and just feel each other. Laugh, whisper, walk hand-in-hand, spin gently — movement, emotion, and connection always read beautifully.
If you’re ever feeling stiff or awkward, just whisper to me. I’ll guide small spontaneous cues to bring out your true selves.

The Dallas Arboretum is such a special place for engagement photos because it offers both timeless beauty and an ever-changing backdrop. Whether you’re drawn to quiet pathways, colorful seasonal displays, or romantic lakeside views, the gardens have a way of making your photos feel vibrant and alive.
More than anything, your engagement session is about celebrating this season of your love story. The Arboretum simply adds that touch of magic to your connection. My goal is always to help you feel comfortable, relaxed, and truly yourselves so the photographs reflect your relationship, not just your poses.
